Overcome the Threats of Stress
 by: Kamau Austin

Today, we lead an increasingly stressful life. Some experts are of the opinion that a little stress can be good for you. A small dose of stress pushes the limits of an individual both physically and mentally and is sometimes crucial for achieving optimum performance. Stress induces a ‘fight or flight’ response in our body, which leads to the release of adrenaline into our blood stream.

For example, students sitting for an exam are often in the grip of a stress response and this helps them to focus and giving their best performance. However, as we all know, prolonged stress is very bad for the body. While a little stress enables us to meet deadlines, longer exposure to it might induce a heart attack or other major health crisis.

Stress is both a physical and psychological response. When the physical and mental demands on our body are more than what it can cope with, the body starts to show the symptoms of stress. The usual characteristics of this kind of a reaction are fatigue, insomnia, developing an irritable disposition, constant and nagging worrying and in some cases, depression.

Living With ADD - What To Expect
 by: Sarah K. Jenkins

For a child, teenager, or adult suffering from ADD, a difficult road may lie ahead. If you have just recently been diagnosed with ADD, you may not know what life will be like for you, how the symptoms will persist, or how age affects ADD. The good news is, as time goes by, you will more than likely learn effective ways to deal with your disorder, making it less and less obtrusive on your life.

As a child, symptoms of ADD are inattentiveness, impulsiveness, distractibility, and often hyperactivity. Interestingly, this does not change that much with age. However, the ability to deal with these symptoms may improve dramatically.

Whether you choose to take medication for your disorder is one deciding factor in how ADD will affect your life. You may wish to discuss with your doctor the long term implications of taking stimulants and other common ADD medications. If you choose to take medications, it may be easier for you to deal with the disorder. However, behaviour therapy may also be utilized.

 by: Vienna Miller

You’ve seen the name everywhere. Hoodia Gordonii has taken the weight loss world by storm. Being touted as the next miracle weight loss pill, Hoodia is now being put into everything from multivitamins to Trimspa.

But does Hoodia work?

Considering the debacle that was Ephedra, consumers are right to be cautious about this new weight loss pill. Does Hoodia actually work to help you lose weight? Does it really do what the pill manufacturers say?

Well, Hoodia has been shown to have some specific effects in the area of weight loss. But there are certain things you should know before running out to buy the latest Hoodia pill from your drug store.

Here are 3 ways Hoodia helps you lose weight and 3 other things you should know to make Hoodia work best for you.

#1) Hoodia Makes You Physically Less Hungry

Pure Hoodia contains a molecule scientists called “P57″ which, they believe, is responsible for making you feel full.

Normally, when you eat food, this food turns to glucose. When the glucose in your body rises it eventually signals to your brain (the hypothalamus) that you are full.

Missing Link to the Immune System

March 20, 2008

For decades science has been looking for the answers to our health problems in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates have long been overlooked - thought just to be energy or calories and play no other significant role.

But recent science has found eight super carbohydrates that are essential for the production and proper function of glycoproteins. Glycoproteins or GPs are the communication mechanism the cells use for everything from cell differentiation in embryonic development to distinguishing healthy cells from pathogenic invaders, to constructing immune factors and calling them to a needed area. This new science is just coming out in physiology and biochemistry books now, like Harper’s Biochemistry 1996 edition. If these eight essential saccharides are not available in adequate amounts, these and many other systems in the body may be impaired. Since only one or two of these super carbohydrates are obtained in our modern diets, supplementing the diet with all the essential saccharides is the best way to insure optimal health and immunity.

How You Might Cure Your Blurred Vision
 by: Nicola Kennedy

Presbyopia, also known as “short arm syndrome”, is a medical term used to describe a vision defect where the natural lens loses its accommodation power. Accommodation power refers to the ability of the eye lens to change its focal distance, depending on whether the object in view is placed up-close or far away. This is a common disorder that virtually everyone experiences in their middle age. Specifically, at the onset of the 40s, people experience blurred vision while looking at nearby objects, such as when reading or sewing.

Presbyopia is different from other vision disorders, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism - these are all concerned with the shape of the eyeball or the corneal tissue and are caused due to genetic factors, trauma, or disease. However, Presbyopia is an age related disorder and is believed to be caused due to a gradual loss of elasticity of the natural eye lens. As the eye lens stiffens with age, it is difficult for the lens to focus up close.

Smelly Feet
 by: Sharon Hopkins

You take care of your feet by washing them regularly.

You change your smelly socks at least once a day. Your shoes are well kept. But in spite of all this, your feet stink. Sometimes the condition is so bad that by simply removing your shoes, people around you know that you have smelly feet. The condition can be embarrassing, especially in public. By following some simple tips, you can take care of your feet and avoid the problem of smelly feet.

The common home remedies for foot odor are:

• Apply tea to the area: Using a soak made from tea bags and applying it to your feet will eliminate the problem of smelly feet. This is because the tannic acid from tea tans the skin. Take a couple of tea bags and boil them in a pint of water for 15 minutes. Then remove the tea bags and pour the pint of this strong, hot tea into a basin or a large pot and fill it with two quarts of cool water. Soak your feet for 30 minutes daily for seven or ten days and you will not experience the problem any longer.

Obesity - Not Everybody Agrees It Is An Epidemic

Obesity - Not Everybody Agrees It Is An Epidemic
 by: Rick Hendershot

Obesity has become such an important topic in health and self-improvement circles that it deserves its own “News and Views” column. Here is the February, 2006 issue.

**Book claims obesity “epidemic” is a big lie

In his new book, “Fat Politics: The Real Story Behind America’s Obesity Epidemic”, writer Eric Oliver claims that the ramped up concern over obesity in the last ten years has been driven by the weight loss industry.

According to Oliver his research led him to conclude that, “Based on the statistics most of the charges saying that obesity caused various diseases or that obesity caused thousands of deaths were simply not supported.”

The writer does not dispute that the average American adult is between 8 and 12 pounds heavier today than in 1975. But he does dispute the significance of this weight gain to average health.

He claims that pharmaceutical companies and the diet industry have funded groups like the International Obesity Task Force whose objective has been to promote the dangers of obesity. According to Oliver, “nearly every prominent obesity ‘expert’ has been financed or supported in some way by the weight-loss industry.”

Expert Patient: A new approach to chronic disease management for the 21st century.

PART 1: INTRODUCTION TO CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT

Are You an “Expert Patient”? Can your Doctor(s) say the following about you?

“My Patient knows more about the disease than I do; as much about the disease as I do, and enough about his/her symptoms that it is easy to communicate with him/her.”

Why is becoming an Expert Patient so important? There is plenty of emerging research about the needs of 21st century patients. Most of that research centers around the concept of “Illness Self-Management”, for what is called “chronic illness”.

What, you ask, is a “chronic illness”. Health concerns are usually classified as either acute or chronic. Acute illnesses usually begin abruptly and last only a short time. Most people with an acute illness can expect to return to normal health. A strep throat is an example of an acute illness: it is easy to diagnose with a lab test and is cured with antibiotics.

Conception Tips and Tips For Getting Pregnant For Those Who Are Trying To Conceive

March 16, 2008

CONCEPTION TIPS

Conception takes place in three basic stages: ovulation, then fertilization, and the division of the fertilized egg, which then implants in the uterus - which it isn’t until then when pregnancy is considered successful! To better understand the process, we have explained in greater detail below each step of the process. If you are trying to conceive, keep reading these conception tips and your chances of getting pregnant are greater.

WHAT IS OVULATION

Ovulation usually occurs midway through a woman’s menstrual cycle. At this point, the follicle which outgrows the others, ruptures and the egg is released. The site of this release is called the stigma, and the follicle goes on to form the corpus luteum.

The corpus luteum produces progesterone which is a hormone responsible for nurturing the baby until the placenta takes over. Barely visible to the naked eye, your baby at this point isn’t bigger than a pencil dot. Keep reading if getting pregnant is what you want!

Tiny hairlike projections called cilia move the released egg from the ovary along the fallopian tube to the uterus. If conception is successful, chances are this will take place toward the outer end of the fallopian tube, near the ovary.

Cheek Implants & Silicone Lip Augmentation, A Tribute To Facial Beauty
 by: Harry John

Today, we live in a culture totally youth-oriented. Aspiration to get younger, healthier and beautiful (or handsome) is growing. Face is the most remarkable feature of a human body. We know someone by face as much as we know by one’s name and fame. But with age we loose the youthfulness and face is the striking human future that shows our loss in terms of health and beauty, by developing loose skins, fine lines and bags around the eyes.

To enhance the facial beauty there are many procedures. But cosmetic plastic surgery offers the most striking results. Facial cosmetic procedures are the most requested procedure which involves tightening the underlying muscles and re-draping the facial skin to augment, define or reshape various facial features. It includes many procedures like: cheek implants (http://www.plasticsurgeryadvisor.com/facial-plastic-surgery/cheek-implants.shtml), silicone lip augmentation (http://www.plasticsurgeryadvisor.com/facial-plastic-surgery/silicone-lip-augmentation.shtml), brow lift, nose reconstruction, eyelid lift, etc.
