ADD and Coexisting Conditions - Why is it so Complicated?
by: Sarah Jenkins
ADD is often accompanied by a coexisting condition. On the other hand, often ADD and these other conditions have similar symptoms and, therefore, are easily misdiagnosed. Of course, this creates a plethora of problems as these disorders, when separate, must be treated differently. A misdiagnosis will lead to ineffective treatment. As coexisting conditions, these are especially of concern, because they increase the severity of many of the symptoms of ADD, as well as the negative impact on those that suffer them.
One such condition is Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder. Children with this disorder tend to be very aggressive and defiant. They usually lose their tempers very easily and challenge authority figures. This is the most easily diagnosable behaviors, as teachers and parents become aware of this conduct quickly and seek treatment almost immediately. This particular disorder is common in children that are the hyperactive/impulsive type of ADD and occurs in 35% of children with ADD. This coexisting condition makes it much more likely that these sufferers will get in legal trouble as they age due to their authoritative defiance.
A Comparison Of Beds

A Comparison Of Beds
by: Cameron Elliott
It’s time to buy a new mattress. There are so many options, so many choices. How do you decide? What do you pick? The salesroom is overwhelming. Beds and mattress all lined up, neatly, perfectly. The salesmen are pushy, demanding. Hammering you with the benefits of this one, of that one.
Leave. Enter an empty room, painted light blue, smelling clean. Welcoming. Soft light filters in through the windows. In the middle of this empty room are three beds, an innerspring, a foam, and an air. Each bed is lined with pillows with a plush blanket. After you leave this room, you will know what mattress to buy.
Lie down on the innerspring mattress. The springs compress, the padding offers some comfort. You can feel your spine. You’re aware of every vertebra. Without a pillow, there is a gap right where your neck becomes your back. You can feel pressure on your hips. Possibly, if you’re exhausted, you’ll fall asleep. But just lying there, you feel awkward, uncomfortable.
Are Home Diagnostic Kits Reliable As A Substitute For Professional Medical Opinions?

Are Home Diagnostic Kits Reliable As A Substitute For Professional Medical Opinions?
by: Terry McDermott
Let’s face it. A trip to the drugstore is a whole lot easier than a costly and time-consuming trip to the doctor’s office. No time wasted waiting for the physician; no embarrassing questions to answer; and no sticker shock when the bill comes. Just head for the section of your pharmacy with all of the gadgets and home test kits and you are ready to “play doctor.”
With skyrocketing medical costs and increased concerns about privacy, more and more Americans are taking advantage of products designed to help monitor existing conditions or to help diagnose new ones. Blood glucose monitors help diabetics manage their condition, blood pressure kits help monitor hypertension while those with cardiovascular concerns can track cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Of course, home pregnancy kits have been available for years. But now it is possible to go well beyond health management with these off-the-shelf products and individuals can now perform diagnostic tests in the comfort and “safety” of their homes.
But is this trend really safe?
Eliminate Sugar and Lose Weight
November 27, 2007
If you want to lose weight, there is one thing you ought to eliminate from your diet?sugar.
Sugar is a villain in your quest to lose weight. You are probably thinking, "Of course, everyone knows that sugar is fattening." Well, there’s more to it than meets the eye. It’s important that you understand exactly why you ought to avoid sugar.
First, let’s define sugar. Sugar takes many more forms than the white table sugar with which you are familiar. Sugar includes corn syrup, maltose, lactose, fructose, sucrose, brown sugar, honey, molasses.
When you ingest cakes, cookies, chocolate, cereal, etc.-in other words, simple carbohydrates-you flood your bloodstream with sugar. (You need to begin to read ingredients labeling to determine if there is sugar in the food. You’ll be surprised at just how many foods contain sugar in one form or another.) The pancreas then produces insulin, a hormone designed to pull sugar out of your bloodstream and deposit it in your cells and your liver.
Because the pancreas does such a good job, your blood sugar rapidly drops lower than it should. (That explains your swings in your energy level.) Your brain then gets the message that your body requires more sugar to return the level to normal. As a result you feel a need to eat more sugar. And the cycle begins again.
Medicare, Social Security and Retirement

Medicare, Social Security and Retirement
by: Rob Scribner
Everything keeps changing, how do I keep up? Why is there so many choices? This is common question and concerns of most seniors today. The cost of health and prescriptions is higher today for seniors, averaging over $500.00 a month.
With fixed incomes, a comfortable retirement seems to be slipping away.
Retirement is re defining itself. The days of a lifetime pension and 401ks are being wiped out. You must think and live different than our Mothers and Fathers did before us. The nest egg is under attack with high health rates, limited 401k’s and lack of pension plans from former employment. Some day Social Security may not be available. What are we to do?
Today a person coming to retirement must study and understand their future goals. A plan must be in place. Some may have to work part time to assist their retirement funds, and some maybe able to live from rare pension plans and investments. Education is the key. Classes, Seminars and home study is available and necessary.

Should You Set Up Your Own Home Gym?
by: Andrew McNaught
Gyms are increasingly popular and as a result public facilities are usually stretched to the limit and as a result offer poor service leaving most users frustrated. Then there are those people who are just not comfortable working out in a public setting. The result is that they usually get very uncomfortable in the gym and are not able to work out enough. Still there are those who prefer to go into the high initial cost of purchasing exercise equipment knowing fully well that in the long term it will end up being a lot cheaper than the increasingly high gym memberships being charged.
These are just three of the most compelling reasons why somebody would want to set up their own home gym. The truth is that home gym can be a good investment for anyone wanting to set up one in their basement or workout room.
A good place to start when looking for equipment for your home gym is with used exercise equipment. These can be picked up at a very good price, more so because their demand is still limited. Your local newspaper classified ads and Ebay are some good places where you can start your search.

The Stages of Sleep
by: Cameron Elliott
It’s 11:45 pm. It’s time for a journey. Perhaps you’ve begun this journey several hours earlier. Perhaps you won’t begin for several more hours. No matter. You’ve undertaken this journey an uncountable number of times in your life, and know the path well. But it’s time to take with fresh eyes. To take it stage by stage, and to understand the science behind the mystery.
Are you ready? Let’s begin.
Stage One: This is the beginning of sleep, as you lie in your bed, head on soft pillows and comfortable blankets pulled up around your chin. At this point, you’re easily awakened, by loud noises, flashing lights, or other distractions. Your eyelids flutter, and your heart rate and breathing begins to slow as you begin to drift in and out of sleep.
After about 10 minutes, you might have a hypnic jerk- the sudden feeling of falling that wakes you up, but soon you’ll drift into the second stage.
Stage Two: Light sleep: Eye movements stop, heart rate slows. Your body temperature drops, and brain waves slow down as you officially fall asleep. Most of the night, 45% is spent in this stage.
The Worse Mistakes People Make with Food
November 24, 2007
There are a number of common food mistakes that costs dearly in money, health, and time. What are the major mistakes made? What changes do you need to make? Here are some food mistakes to avoid.
1. Last minute meal planning or no planning at all. The results: not knowing what ingredients to have and/or not having the right ingredients.
2. Bad planning for shopping; not knowing what’s on sale, what’s in season, what you are out of, etc. Result? One buys what isn’t needed and spends too much on what is needed.
3. Convenience spending/cooking. Examples are; TV dinners, chicken already cut up, items in ready-to-use/serving sizes, etc.. This buying habit costs lots of money. Whole chicken at 49 cents a pound is much less than skinned breast at $3.89 a pound.
4. Unplanned trips for missing ingredients. Buying an item at the last minute means paying full price and buying other items not needed just because you are there.
5. Buying “wants” not “needs”. This habit causes incomplete meals or snacks as meals. Also, it results in not having healthy food for meals.

by: Christian Goodman

The migraine triggers can be
• The food you eat
• Stress or other tense emotions

Circadian Rhythms Can Save A Marriage
by: Cameron Elliott
Every list of tips and every piece of advice Mick found on sleeping better mentioned something along the lines of having “good sleep hygiene:” having a regular bedtime and getting up at the same time every morning. Supposedly, the tips argued, this keeps your body in its natural sleep cycle, based on circadian rhythms.
An accountant, Mick didn’t believe it for a second. He was a busy man, often crunching numbers late into the night. Exhausted all week, he sleeps all weekend. Sure, nights when he didn’t have to work late Mick could sleep until 3 or 4, and he rarely wanted to get out of bed in the mornings. But Mick wasn’t concerned. It was his system, and he liked it.
Bridget, Mick’s wife, was of a different mind on the subject. Bridget often argued with her husband about his bizarre sleeping patterns. It eventually got so bad that Bridget threatened to leave Mick. In a last ditch effort to save his marriage, Mick agreed to start sleeping a normal schedule.
